Two football enthusiasts Shri Kitdor Syiem and Shri P. D. Sawyan, during the finals of the Meghalaya Invitation Cup in 1982, were disheartened by the poor performance of the Shillong teams and their failure to make it to the final phase of the tournament. In order to reverse the trend formed a football club. They started a semi –professional club aptly called Lajong Football Club with a group of friends and supporters.

The club in 1983 played in the 3rd Division of the Shillong Sports Association League and became the champion and they were then promoted to the 2nd Division and in 1984, the club was promoted to the First Division of the league. In the year 1989 Lajong FC finally won Shillong Championship for the first time.
